FAQ: Alice: Otherlands

720 or 480p?

Both and more. Since the “Otherlands” shorts are going to be computer animated, we’ll be able to output to a range of formats. We’re still working on distribution methods, but rest assured, our goal is to make access to this content easy - and to provide all the major formats. If we end up with a special request or two (within reason) for output type, then we’ll handle that on an as-need basis. Last updated: Tue, Jul 16 2013 3:08 am EDT

How will the money be used?

We need 100k to secure a 12 month license to and exploit the animation rights. If we raise 200k, then 100k goes towards the first step of securing the rights in full. We’ll spend what’s left over on creating animations. Depending on how much more we raise, we purchase/unlock additional elements in the rights (and more time) - and we’ll make more animations. In order to purchase outright, for all time, the film rights - we need 500k. I don’t expect all of that to come from Kickstarter though. Also, keep in mind that Spicy Horse doesn’t take a profit from any of this. Money comes in, part goes out to pay for the rights, other part goes out to fund animation production (with an external team). In this since, we’re being pure producers, but not taking a fee of any sort. Last updated: Tue, Jul 23 2013 1:29 am EDT

DRM-free?

Yes! Please, stop worrying about this! We’ve stated many times our position on DRM. There will be no DRM! That being said, there WILL be a one-time registration on the website where you download the video(s) for the first time. Just a normal registration, nothing icky or evil. Once you’ve registered, you’ll have access to the download files. Since those files will be DRM-free, you’ll then be able to copy them to your friends, burn them on DVDs, sell them and torrent them like crazy - but you wouldn’t do that, would you? Blu Ray?

Ok, you’ve convinced us you want Blu-ray. But rather than muddy the process with three more tiers we’re just going to leave things as they are and at the end of the Kickstarter the survey will ask whether you want a standard DVD or a Blu-ray Last updated: Tue, Jul 16 2013 2:46 pm EDT

Will English subtitles be provided both digitally and embedded onto the DVD?

We can easily distribute text subtitle files (in .SRT format for example) along with the digital video files. We’ll also embed English subtitles with the DVD. As for other languages, it’s difficult to commit at this point, but we’ll keep open the option and make a decision based on how large the campaign gets. Last updated: Tue, Jul 16 2013 3:08 am EDT

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
